LAN or WAN connectivity between subnets across a high-speed network. Often applied to a high-speed campus network, such as ATM OC-12 or Gigabit Ethernet, that interconnects lower-speed networks, such as ATM OC-3 or Fast Ethernet. Fibre optic cable is often used.
